Home Safety Tips Basement, Garage, and Storage Ø Store gasoline and other flammable in properly labeled tight metal containers. Ø Don't store anything near a pilot light. Ø Have heating equipment checked yearly. Ø Clean up your workbench. Ø Sort and remove rubbish. Don't store things near the furnace or heater. Ø Space Heaters need a minimum 3 foot clearance from any flammable material such as wood, bedding, etc.; rule of thumb: as per NFPA, if it can burn – it needs 3 feet of space. Bedroom Ø Install a smoke detector inside and outside of your sleeping area. Ø Plan two escapes from each bedroom. Ø Don't smoke in bed. Ø Don't overload electrical outlets. Living or Family Room Ø Use large ashtrays. Ø Use a metal fireplace screen. Have the chimney cleaned often. Ø Put lighters and matches where small children won't find them. Use special outlet coves to keep children's fingers out Ø Allow air space around the TV and stereo to prevent overheating. If the TV (or other appliance) doesn't work right, it can be a fire danger. Have it checked out Ø Keep portable heaters away from people and combustibles. [See above!] Kitchen Ø All electrical appliances and tools should have a testing agency label. Ø Don't overload the outlets. Ø Water and electricity combined cause shock. Ø Have dry hands; don't stand in water. Ø Don't store things over the stove. Turn pot handles so children can't pull them down. Ø Wear tight sleeves when you cook. .............................................................
